  2.               OMEn - the new multi-tasking OS

  5. There is one  difference  with  this  multi-tasking OS. OMEn
  6. (standing  for  Open   Multi-tasking   Environment),   is  a
  7. Shareware release.  Yes,  it's  free!  Well,  almost...  But
  8. because it's Shareware  it  doesn't  automatically mean that
  9. it's crap. No, OMEn is  far  from  it!  It's  even up to the
  10. standards of Geneva and Mag!x  as  well as MultiTOS. But how
  11. does it compare?

  13. OMEn is really a completely new operating system. It doesn't
  14. run  any  TOS   or   GEM   applications;  only  applications
  15. especially written  for  it.  But  this  doesn't  mean  that
  16. there's nothing good about  it.  Lot's  of programs are, and
  17. will, be written  for  it.  There's  another brilliant thing
  18. about OMEn as well. It  is  being  written for the PC, Amiga
  19. and Apple Mac.  And  this  means  that  we  will  be able to
  20. exchange programs with our  Amiga  owning friends, PC owning
  21. friends or Apple Mac owning  enemies!  A program written for
  22. OMEn on the ST will  work  on  the  Amiga, ST and Apple Mac.
  23. This means OMEn is very compatible!

  25. When OMEn is in operation,  it  looks  very different to the
  26. GEM desktop we all  know  and  love  (semi-love - David) and
  27. takes features from PC's windows,  the  ST's desktop and the
  28. Amiga's workbench, making it quite  easy  to use for all new
  29. users. OMEn's desktop appears in a  window with its own menu
  30. bar, a bit like GEM.  To  load  files into programs you just
  31. click on a file and drag it to the program; there is no such
  32. thing as a file selector! It's weird, but good.

  34. OMEn is programmed in pure assembler code making it fast and
  35. compatible. There are many new  features  in OMEn that don't
  36. appear in any other  of  the multi-tasking operating systems
  37. that make OMEn a good  choice.  Colour printing is supported
  38. as well as several types  of fonts including Postscript type
  39. 3.

  41. Although it sounds very good,  will  OMEn survive? No matter
  42. how brilliant it may be, it  needs software to make it work,
  43. and if people don't  develop  software  for  it, then kaput,
  44. bam, goodbye; it won't be  here  very  longer.... Wait for a
  45. full review next issue!
